How to be an AUTHENTIC Teacher with Yari Mercedes | Rootwords-The Podcast
Authenticity is something that gets thrown around a whole lot in the education world, but it is rarely unpacked and explored like this. We are doing a REWIND on Season TWO of Rootwords-The Podcast with dope guests adding their unique perspectives to the conversation. I was honored to have the opportunity to reconnect with one of my favorite people to kick things off with the concept of being AUTHENTIC. It's the one-of-a-kind brilliant beauty, Yari @yari.mercedes!
We chopped it up about how authenticity plays a part in our lives... and the incredible opportunity teachers have to help students discover who they are, and acknowledge their continuous evolution in the ways that best serve them. Major gems and 🔥 ideas were shared and we hope you were feeling the love as much as we were!
Good Times, Good People!

An Adventurous Educator - Rootwords | The Podcast

We still need kids to want to be teachers when they grow up. That doesn’t happen without engaging inspiration. Are your students stuck in a rut? Do they seem to lack the motivation to learn new things? If so, it might be time to encourage them to explore more adventurous learning opportunities. What if we created immersive experiences for students where they not only saw themselves but they saw...

Do you remember the last time you were truly free? Not held back by anyone or anything, just living in the moment and enjoying life for what it is? For most people, this doesn't happen very often. We are constantly told what to do, how to do it, and when. This type of lifestyle can be stifling for some people, but there is a way to break free from these chains. Being a free spirit means living ...
A Powerful Educator - Rootwords | The Podcast

Powerful is defined as having or exerting great force, having great authority or influence, and being mighty and effective as a speech or speaker. In an essay called Step Sisters in her collection book The Source of Self Regard, Toni Morrison blew my mind by using a classic Disney movie to think about how these characters would use their power after the movie moments that we saw concluded. In t...

When we empower all the parts of us, even those that are self-proclaimed imperfect, that effort has the power to affect how we see the world, the environments, and the relationships all around us. There is a deep level of reflection that has to take place and continue to take place to be accepting of yourself, your process, and your journey. Authenticity and imperfection go hand and hand. You w...

Authentic is defined as not false or copied, being genuine, real, and representing one's true nature or beliefs, true to oneself or the person identified entitled to acceptance or belief because of agreement with known facts or experience being reliable or trustworthy. Wow, that's a lot, but it's so important. I chose to start season two with this concept of being your authentic self because it...

Students can't be confident in their abilities if they don't understand the power of their own brains and bodies. Let's start there. One of our core essential understandings is that the brain is malleable. Knowing that the brain is continually making new connections, creating new neurons, pruning away the unused, a TON in the early childhood and adolescence years, it makes me challenge the idea...

If we want students well versed with the emotional capacity to continue with this long road ahead of us in to bring long-overdue equity into this country, then they need to learn how to do that from the trusting adults in their lives. I challenge all educators (especially educators committed to historically marginalized communities) to think about these questions: Do you believe that all studen...

Have you ever heard someone say, "That's not my job?" Maybe you have said it at one point in your career. I know I have been there. This episode takes a close look at THREE (plus a bonus…wink) things that are your job if you take on the great RESPONSIBILITY to educate children at any grade level. We are sensitive to the times we are in right now but want to be responsive and attuned to the need...

Hi there... Man really had to think back to the curriculum I was using at that time... That was Open Court... I'm sure it has changed a ton since then. It sure was fun to teach though... It's worth a Google search to find those sound spelling stories for sure. Thank you so much for watching and supporting the channel!

Just wanted to say that I needed to watch certain videos for hours on my timesheet. It is 2:34 am and I don't even HAVE to watch this video and I've even watched a couple more of your videos that won't even count! And I still watched them. Not only that but I'm sort of in a time crunch so I don't really even have time to watch these videos. But they are AMAZING! This is my favorite "classroom decorations" so far. What is that in the corner?...The sun? Your classrooms come alive! I had made up my mind to teach high school but you're seriously making me reconsider. You deserve teacher of the year! And yes, I've seen that video too! Thanks for the inspiration.
